Preserving Whole Smiles by Removing Pesky Teeth

Brush Pediatric Dentistry’s number one goal is to always preserve your child’s natural teeth, but sometimes one can become so damaged or infected that the best solution is to simply extract it. This may also be necessary to create room for their emerging adult teeth or orthodontic treatment. We’ll always take extra special care to do it gently so your child won’t be afraid to come see us again, and, thanks to modern dental techniques, most of the time we have the tooth out before they even know we’ve started! Here’s a quick look at how pediatric tooth extractions work, but feel free to contact our staff if you’d like to know more.

Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

Tooth extractions aren’t typically our first choice of treatment. However, there are situations in which it may be necessary to remove severely damaged teeth or those that won’t fall out to preserve your child’s dental health. In some cases, this is to make room for the emerging permanent teeth or a necessary orthodontic treatment. Our team will make sure to speak with you about all your child’s options and answer any questions you may have so you feel confident moving forward with a children’s tooth extraction at our office in Hinsdale or Downers Grove.

The Process of Removing a Tooth

At Brush Pediatric Dentistry, the process of removing a child’s tooth will always begin with the patient receiving an appropriate anesthetic to ensure their comfort, and we may also administer a sedation treatment to help your little one remain still and calm throughout the procedure. Then, our skilled dentist will use a specialized device called an elevator to lift the targeted tooth out of its socket before gently working it loose with forceps. After the tooth is removed, we will be sure to provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to help ensure that your child enjoys a speedy, comfortable, and complication-free recovery.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare

Your child’s tooth extraction aftercare instructions will probably include the following guidelines:

  • Have your child refrain from spitting or drinking through a straw for at least twenty-four hours after the procedure to prevent a severely painful complication called dry socket.
  • Have your child keep their head in an elevated position when laying down to help reduce discomfort.
  • Help your child remember to avoid chewing around the extraction site.
  • Give your child over-the-counter pain medication according to the instructions printed on the label.
